Shopping with DT Brown

DT Brown brings together seeds, plants, bulbs and gardening equipment. The best starting point is the space available rather than the size of a sale badge. Measure a border, raised bed or container and note how much light it receives. A sunny patio pot and a shaded strip beside a fence call for different choices. Decide which crops or flowers you will realistically look after, then build a short list around those needs. For vegetables, think about what your household actually eats and when you would like to harvest it. For flowers, consider height and flowering period so that plants do not all compete for the same small space. Buying fewer suitable varieties can be more useful than filling a drawer with discounted packets.

Read the seed packet details

Compare sowing instructions, expected spacing and the number of seeds in each pack. A low packet price can be attractive, but large quantities are not always helpful for a small garden. Check whether a variety is intended for outdoor sowing, protected starting or another growing method. Use the instructions for that variety rather than applying one timetable to every crop. Keep seed packets labelled and record sowing dates so that later results are easier to understand. If you plan successive sowings, divide the intended space on paper before buying. This helps avoid raising more seedlings than you can accommodate. Storage instructions also matter; follow the packet guidance and do not assume every leftover seed will perform identically in a later season.

Make a seasonal delivery plan

A gardening order often contains items with different fulfilment needs. Read each product availability statement and any dispatch information before relying on a single delivery date. A seed packet that can be stored is different from a living plant that needs unpacking and care. Check the delivery total for your address and whether a mixed order may arrive separately. If the purchase is intended for a weekend project, leave room for weather and preparation rather than assuming the date on an advertisement is a delivery commitment. On arrival, identify the contents against your order and keep variety labels with the relevant plants. A simple notebook of purchases, planting dates and results can make next season’s buying decisions more selective.
